Students will focus on the most intimate aspects of the human experience to see how sexual relations are fundamental to the concept and the practice of citizenship in America.
Some questions that this class hopes to address are: How are political and sexual dominance related? What is "biopower" and why is it important to citizenship? How are marriage and citizenship connected? How is the household situated within the polity? How have same sex and queer relations been interpreted in US law? How does race and ethnicity complicate ideas of sex and citizenship?
Can and should the government police sex for the welfare of the polity? Learning Outcomes: This class will introduce students to the modern historiography of sex and gender in America. Students will leave this class with an increased ability to think critically about American history. Students will increase their proficiency in writing, public speaking, and the Chicago style of citation. Plagiarism will be punished by a failure for the course. Every student should be prepared to speak to some aspect of the reading during every class. Absence from class will result in no credit for participation on that day. The tests will consist of 5 identification responses, one short essay and one long essay.
